The annual Chow Chow Luncheon at Howard Hanna Simon Real Estate Services has come a long way since it began 21 years ago.
The tradition, which attracts more than 200 people each year, will continue at noon Friday at the Cedarbrook Golf Course Clubhouse Grille near the intersection of state Route 51 and Interstate 70 in Rostraver Township.
Doors will open at 11 a.m. Tom Simon, Howard Hanna owner/broker, said the luncheon started in 1998 as a small office event where employees brought a covered dish.
“Now we have more than 200 people every year, with sometimes standing room only,” Simon said.
As always, the event will benefit Monongahela Valley Hospital in Carroll Township.
For the 11th year, proceeds directly go to the hospital’s Children’s Free Care Fund, which provides lifesaving health care to children in need around the Mon Valley. “This was created for children who have a medical need, but do not have insurance,” Simon said. “Even beyond that if someone does have insurance and a child needs treatment every day at the hospital but the family is struggling to find gas money, we will use funds to provide gas money so that parents or guardians are able to take children to treatment that they so desperately need.”
He cited a case in which a newborn was dropped off at the hospital and money from the Children’s Free Care Fund was able to make sure the baby was cared for.
Last year the event raised more than $15,000, bringing the total donations to $189,064.
Additionally, Howard Hanna Corporate has raised more than $1 million over the years for similar causes, with a portion of those proceeds benefiting the Monongahela Valley Hospital program.
Simon and his team are hoping to raise even more for MVH this year.
“We appreciate everyone who has made it their own tradition to come and support this year after year,” he said. “And we definitely encourage anyone who has never been to stop up and see us. It’s for a great cause and it is a lot of fun.”
In addition to lunch, the event will feature live auctions with items such as signed sports memorabilia, themed gift baskets and gift certificates and a photo booth.
Monetary or prize donations are still being accepted and can be dropped off at the Howard Hanna office in Rostraver Township.
Checks should be made payable to the Howard Hanna Charitable Fund.
Everyone who donates is entitled to at least one free ticket to the event.
More tickets will be given in accordance with the value of the donation.
“Every year we have a lot of fun and every year I feel truly blessed to be a part of this,” Simon said. “It really is a special event that so much love and work goes into year round by my staff, who work tirelessly to pull this off.”
Tickets are $10 and are available at the door or the Howard Hanna office on Rostraver Road in Rostraver Township.
